National Seniors Australia welcomes the opportunity to make a submission to the Queensland Government as part of the budget process for 2023-24. National Seniors Australia is an independent consumer lobby group for older Australians.

Summary

National Seniors recommends maintaining and indexing state subsidies to address price increases until improved replacement concessions are implemented permanently.

Increase the Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate to $100/year, apply indexation, and extend to bottled gas users.

Increase the water subsidy to $150/year for Pensioner Concession Card holders and offer 50% of this for Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders throughout Queensland.

Address the lack of affordable housing for older Australians, especially those on the Age Pension.

Implement a stamp duty concession scheme for seniors similar to those in the ACT and Victoria.

Introduce free public transport for seniors to improve mobility, reduce social isolation, and maintain health and wellbeing.

Continue the Taxi Subsidy Scheme (TSS) beyond 31 October 2023 for seniors with disabilities or mobility impairments who are not NDIS participants.
